The One Rule That Governs Everything
Since the Gun Control Act of 1968, interstate firearm sales must route through a federally licensed dealer in the buyer's home state. Every legitimate online retailer — and every marketplace seller on GunBroker or similar platforms — ships to an FFL, never to a residence. The receiving dealer is the legal checkpoint where identity, eligibility, and paperwork happen.
The Pipeline, Start to Finish
- Contact your receiving dealer BEFORE you buy. This is the step people skip, and it causes virtually every transfer headache. Confirm the dealer accepts transfers, get their fee, and have their license information ready for the seller. (Our own policy: transfers are limited and case-by-case — read it here and always ask first.)
- Place your order and give the seller your dealer's information. Retailers with FFL databases may already have the license on file; otherwise the dealers exchange a copy directly.
- The firearm ships dealer-to-dealer. On arrival, the receiving dealer logs it into their ATF bound book. You'll get a call to schedule pickup.
- Pickup appointment: ATF Form 4473, NICS background check, transfer fee, and — in Indiana — no state waiting period. Approved buyers leave with the firearm that day.
What It Costs
Transfer fees in our region typically run $25–$50 per firearm, set by each dealer. Add the seller's shipping charge. Factor both into any online "deal" — a $20 savings over local stock evaporates quickly once shipping and transfer fees stack up. Sometimes the local price wins; we'll quote ours straight so you can compare honestly.
Common Pitfalls
- Shipping without dealer confirmation. Unannounced packages can be refused and returned at the sender's expense.
- Buying a firearm your state prohibits. Especially relevant for our Illinois neighbors — verify legality in your home state before you pay anyone.
- Address mismatches. Your ID must reflect your current address at pickup, same as any dealer sale.
