What a Type 01 FFL Covers

A Type 01 Federal Firearms License authorizes a dealer to engage in the business of selling firearms (other than destructive devices), to receive firearms in interstate commerce, and to conduct firearm transfers to eligible persons. It obligates the dealer to maintain permanent acquisition and disposition records (the "bound book"), to complete an ATF Form 4473 for every transfer, to run background checks through the FBI's NICS system, and to submit to ATF compliance inspections.

How Every Sale Works Here

  1. Identity verification. A valid government-issued photo ID showing your current residential address.
  2. ATF Form 4473. Completed in person at our licensed premises — federal rules do not allow this paperwork to be done remotely or in advance.
  3. FBI NICS background check. Submitted at the time of sale. The transfer proceeds only on an approved response or as federal rules otherwise permit.
  4. Record-keeping. The transaction is logged in our ATF-required records before the firearm leaves the shop.

Indiana Requirements

Indiana does not impose a purchase permit, an owner identification card, or a state waiting period for retail firearm purchases. Eligibility is governed by federal law and Indiana's prohibited-person statutes. Since July 1, 2022, Indiana also allows eligible adults to carry a handgun without a license — although purchasing and carrying remain separate legal questions, and we encourage every buyer to review Indiana Code Title 35, Article 47 or consult counsel for carry-related specifics.

Age Requirements (Dealer Sales)

  • Handguns and handgun ammunition: 21 years or older
  • Rifles, shotguns, and long gun ammunition: 18 years or older

Out-of-State Buyers

Federal law controls interstate sales. We may sell long guns to residents of other states in person only when the sale complies with the laws of both Indiana and the buyer's home state. For Illinois residents this includes presenting a valid FOID card and satisfying Illinois' own requirements. Handguns cannot be transferred over the counter to out-of-state residents under any circumstance — they must be shipped to an FFL in the buyer's home state for transfer there.

Transfers

Our FFL transfer policy is limited and handled case-by-case. Never direct a seller to ship a firearm to us without prior confirmation — unauthorized shipments may be refused. See our FFL transfer service page for details.

What We Will Never Do

  • Complete a sale without a passed background check and completed 4473
  • Participate in a straw purchase — buying a firearm on behalf of someone else is a federal felony, full stop
  • Transfer a firearm to anyone we reasonably believe is prohibited or impaired
  • "Pre-run" background checks or complete paperwork off-premises

All firearm sales, transfers, and pickups are conducted in strict compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws. A valid government-issued photo ID is required, and every dealer transaction includes an ATF Form 4473 and FBI NICS background check. Out-of-state purchasers are subject to additional federal restrictions.

This page is provided for general information only and is not legal advice. Firearm laws change; always verify current requirements with official sources — the ATF (atf.gov), Indiana State Police, and, for out-of-state buyers, your home state's authorities.
