Yes, Illinois residents can buy long guns (rifles and shotguns) in person from an Indiana dealer — but only when the sale fully complies with the laws of both Indiana and Illinois. That means a valid FOID card, Illinois's waiting-period rules respected, and no firearm types Illinois bans for its residents. Handguns are different: federal law flatly prohibits a dealer from handing a handgun to an out-of-state resident. A handgun must be shipped to a licensed FFL in Illinois, where you complete the transfer under Illinois law.
This isn't dealer policy — it's the federal Gun Control Act (18 U.S.C. § 922(b)(3)). Any dealer who tells you otherwise is describing a felony.
Long Guns: What's Allowed

- Valid, current Illinois FOID card — required by Illinois law for you to acquire or possess any firearm.
- Valid photo ID matching your FOID information.
- ATF Form 4473 + FBI NICS background check, completed at our shop like every dealer sale.

Handguns: The FFL-Transfer Route
If you're an Illinois resident and you want a handgun we stock, here's the lawful path: you purchase it, and we ship it to a licensed dealer in Illinois of your choosing. That Illinois FFL completes the transfer — their Form 4473, Illinois's FTIP check, the 72-hour handgun waiting period, and their transfer fee. It adds a step, but it's the only legal route, and we make our end of it seamless.
Your FOID Card Still Rules
Your Firearm Owner's Identification card is an Illinois requirement that follows you everywhere. Buying in Indiana does not exempt you from it — possessing a firearm or ammunition as an Illinois resident without a valid FOID is an Illinois crime. Before your visit: confirm your FOID isn't expired, the address matches your ID, and your status hasn't been revoked. No valid FOID, no sale — full stop.
Items Illinois Bans (We Can't Sell You)
Illinois restricts items that are perfectly legal for Indiana residents. As an Illinois buyer, we cannot sell you firearms or magazines that Illinois law prohibits you from possessing, including items covered by Illinois's assault-weapons legislation and magazine-capacity limits, or suppressors (banned outright in Illinois). Ammunition Purchases
Illinois law requires its residents to hold a FOID card to possess ammunition. Indiana imposes no such requirement on the sale, but your home-state obligation travels with you. Practical rule: carry your FOID when buying ammo here, exactly as you would at home.

- Schedule your appointment and bring your FOID + photo ID.
- Complete the 4473 and NICS check at our counter.
- Pick up per the waiting-period timing we confirm for your purchase — we'll tell you exactly when the firearm can go home with you.
Transporting Home Legally
Illinois transport rules: the firearm should be unloaded and enclosed in a case (or broken down in a non-functioning state) for the drive home. Ammunition may travel in the same vehicle. - "Indiana is a loophole." False. Every sale we make to an Illinois resident includes a federal background check and must satisfy both states' laws. There is no loophole — just federal law working as written.
- "I can buy a handgun if I have a FOID." False. No out-of-state resident may take handgun delivery from an Indiana dealer, FOID or not. FFL transfer to Illinois is the only route.
- "No FOID needed since I'm buying in Indiana." False. Illinois law binds Illinois residents everywhere. No valid FOID, no sale.
- "Private sales avoid all this." Dangerously false. Federal law prohibits unlicensed interstate transfers; a private sale across state lines must go through an FFL.
